The Black Repertory Group in Berkeley is the oldest African American theatrical organization of its kind in the nation. Established in 1964, it has produced hundreds of acclaimed stage performances and supported the careers of many famous alumni such as Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover, Teri Vaughn,Kelita Smith,KHELANI, and Maya Angelou. Great writers like MacArthur Genius Award/& AUDELCO award winner Ishmael Reed, movie producer David E. Talbert, comedian Paul Mooney, Mari Evans,, Moms Mabley, Katt Williams,Mucical composers Carman Moore,Herb Geller and so many more performers, writers, composers & directors have dawned the stages of the Black Repertory Group. Our History

Learn about the rich history of Black Repertory Group Theatre, which has been a cornerstone of the Bay Area performing arts community for the past 60 years.

In the late ‘50’s- 2 young newly married school teachers set out on a mission in Vicksburg Mississippi ,with the passionate goal to teach their students their history through the works of Black playwrites and Black Artists in an effort to provide a portal to the Black experience .

However, you as an Elite member can apply your discounts for building rentals that host birthdays, anniversary’s, baby showers, Repass for home-goings or some other appropriate event. Possibly a youth in the family or community could benefit from our programs. You may apply your discount access for their rental or enrollments.

We have an extensive collection of costumes available to rent for your next production or event. From period pieces to contemporary designs, our costumes are sure to impress.

Also we continue to accept unique props and clothing that represent periods in history , and that are in good condition and can improve and support the quality of our productions.

Also we integrate classes in costume design and provide opportunities for costumers young and old to operate in a training environment. It is our hopes that we will continue to harbor an environment where the current and hopefully the next exiting theatrical costume Designer. Our costume rental program enables youth from our employment training collaborations with an opportunity to share this experience with the youth whom are enrolled. This experience teaches appreciation and preservation combined the value and worth of garments proves to be an economic opportunity through development.

HOW TO

To prepare for an audition, meticulously study the script, memorize your lines, and understand your character's motivations and objectives. Research the project, choose appropriate audition material, and practice your performance multiple times. On audition day, arrive early, dress in comfortable but neat clothing, bring a headshot and resume, and maintain a calm, confident, and friendly demeanor throughout the experience.
